Chip and Day were together for 3 years at the University of New Hampshire. While Day did set school records as QB, their overall record was 15-18, and 9-19 in conference. Their best year was 1998 when they went 6-5 (3-5 in the Atlantic 10 conference).

In the NFL, they were 6-9 at Philadelphia in 2015 when Kelly was fired before the final game of the season. The next year in San Francisco was even worse at 2-14.

That's a combined record of 23-41 (.359).

And the bar is a lot higher at tOSU. As noted elsewhere, 11-1 in the regular season isn't going to cut it. Chip and Day HAVE to beat Michigan and make the CFP championship game to be considered successful. Day on his own has "only" beaten Michigan twice in 5 years, and made the CFP championship game once.

Under the new 5+7 playoff format, tOSU is a virtual lock to qualify every year, if they lose in the first or second game, the season is a push at best, but most fans will consider it a disappointment if not an outright failure.

There are certainly reasons to believe they can get it done, but their non-existent history of "working well together" isn't one of them.
