-Players would flee into the transfer portal rather than play for a guy with a 1-year tag on him than a grab bag of what's next.
-Recruiting would grind to a standstill (or at least, not pick up from where we are now.)
-Not sure anyone competent would take a job with that tag - agents would advise their clients against it.
-And if the guy does slightly better than expected, there will be pressure from the team, media etc. to make him permanent -- see Lavin, Steve.
It's just not a good plan.
