I am confused by the tone of multiple articles I've read

Which are almost painting Chip as this huge victim in all of this.

He was hamstrung by UCLA's financial situation - umm, he had a lot a to do with that

He couldn't recruit because of institutional constraints - umm he refused to recruit.

HE refused to recruit which tanked our recruiting and obliterated all of the program's standing with high school coaches and power brokers. After chasing away much of the roster's talent, he then cratered the program which combined with his refusal to engage with boosters, donors and the fanbase as a whole, chased away them all away too. The lack of money was largely on him due to lost ticket sales, concessions, and donors refusing to pour money into a program led by a coach that was giving them the finger. Since he arrived Chip has acted like he's the smartest guy in the room, that engaging with supporters and program was beneath him, and that winning games didn't actually matter, which I guess from his perspective was a good thing since he didn't win very many. While our AD is a schmick and our chancellor was indifferent to the program's success, Chip's failings were Chip's failings and the program is much worse off today than when he arrived not because of those things, but because of Chip.
