UCLA has brought in some borderline academic guys over the years. I don't want to list their names but this idea that UCLA is hard to get into as a football player is wrong.
There are a number of reasons why Chip scouts the low hanging fruit. He doesn't like kissing up to kids, thinks recruiting is beneath him, and just does not enjoy wooing people. You could argue that maybe this is a virtue of character, but it's disastrous for a CFB coach.
Mora brought in some highly rated classes and huge recruits. You can argue the actual quality of those classes if you want, but there's no doubt he was able to land guys who were coveted by big programs. Chip's failures as a recruiter were his own, not UCLA's. UCLA is traditionally a top 25 draw for recruits.
