Chip did well by his players; his offenses were pretty good (on the shoulders of DTR mostly) BUT recruiting - which is the base of any program

He gets to move on to a position - hopefully for him - where he can actually do just coaching and not shoulder the burden (or not as it were) of always doing recruiting and sucking up to donors.

UCLA gets to avoid the buyout and move on. And absorb some of the burden of fan reaction to what is more likely than not to be an extremely difficult next season with either an interim or a new HC's honeymoon year.

On the new HC, older coaches have been bailing out of their positions in greater numbers of late - significant HCs, too. The job has become a nonstop, year around constant activity job. Whoever our new HC is, be the hire shortly or after next season, i hope it's someone young and energetic enough to fit into what college football is today and embrace it.
