a good idea. Yes, talent is the most important part of a program but, along with that goes a bazillion other factors. Alabama is far from the richest collective yet we have recruited many 4 and 5 stars because of Saban's rep of putting guys in the pros.
Being good at evaluating talent is a huge plus for a HC.
Additionally, few are ready to play without being coached up both on the field and at film review on top of position meetings. Players don't determine game plans and strategy, they don't initiate tendency studies and they don't make game day decisions
Players are not responsible for generating support from the fans, alumni, and administrators
Who teaches players new positions ?.
Players are mostly still kids, who infuses discipline ?
There is a reason why only a handful of names pop up when big programs are looking for a head coach. It is a pressure laden, 7 days a week demanding job where being average can get you fired. NIL and the portal has only increased the difficulty.
