At the Arcadia Invitational tonight (a big high school meet) Chris Derrick of Nequa Valley (Ill.) ran the 5000 m in 13:55:96, the sixth fastest time in the US ever and a new Illinois state record. He just flew past everybody and got stronger as the race progressed. He beat the second-place finisher by 40 seconds. Chris is also the national class 3A cross country champion.
