I'm not Catholic but I was hoping either one of the Latin American or African Cardinals would have gotten the nod.
At this point Africa is exploding in terms of Catholism but even more important, Africa needs someone with an international voice to help bring attention to the outbreak of AIDs, genocide, starvation, diamond trade, and civil war. Much like John Paul was a voice for the oppressed religons in the Eastern Block, the African Cardinal could bring national attention to the attrocities of Africa. I believe he also turned a blind eye in terms the use of condoms in Africa which is a dire need the epidemic of AIDs.
While I understand the reasoning for going with Benedict, i.e. having a guy to transition from John Paul whose philosophy he worked hand in hand with. IMO this was not the brave choice in terms of what direction the Catholic Church needs to go in this day and age.
