If the service team can't put the ball in play because of a bad serve or rules infraction, then they should be penalized. What's wrong with that? If anything, rally scoring forces the service team to be on its toes. They can no longer think, "If we screw this service up, then let's make sure we sideout when they serve." To me, it made the game more exciting. Whenever UCLA was in a dogfight, I relaxed when they served, because I knew the other team couldn't score. Now, if UCLA is in a tight game with rally scoring, I hold my breath every time I see that ball go up in the air regardless of who's serving.
