Why do the top two teams meet in the semis?

Is this one of those 'regionals' type things where the semifinal pairings were set before the tournament started?
On a totally different subject...I didn't read every thread on the bb board, but there seemed to be some discussion that you were one of the participants in the halftime contest. True? If so, which one?
