“ Black political commentator Coleman Hughes slammed critics of Jason Aldean's new song as hypocrites, saying calling Aldean 'pro-lynching' is dishonest and rap lyrics are generally much worse.
Aldean, 46, has faced days of backlash over his song 'Try That in a Small Town,' the video for which features news footage from a handful of riots, many of them violent, that took place across the country over the last few years.
All the while, Aldean and his band play and sing the song in front of the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee.
But Hughes, a member of the Forbes 30 under 30 class of 2021, mounted a defense of Aldean in The Free Press in which he argued that the song's lyrics are inoffensive compared with lyrics from the likes of chart-toppers Lil Baby and 21 Savage.
'While it is true that Aldean’s lyrics are pro-gun and contain a brand of machismo that might be off-putting to some, they are mild compared to the lyrics routinely heard in mainstream rap songs.' “
