I was at the UCLA baseball game last night. It was a wet, blustery day in L.A., but the last drizzle cleared out just as my friend and I arrived for the game. Sat on the third base side with the setting sun behind us. Then, against the cloudy sky beyond the right field, a gigantic, stunning full rainbow emerged. Some fans wondered if that was going to be a good omen for Notre Dame somehow.

Good turnout of fans, considering the weather, but nothing close to full. Only a handful of Notre Dame fans as far as I could tell.

UCLA scored first with one run in the bottom of the first; Notre Dame tied it up in the top of the fifth. It was tight and it was even the whole way, although it seemed to me Notre Dame was finding the most opportunities to break through. They just couldn't cash in.

Then, in the bottom of the tenth, Kevin Kramer singled and later advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. A strikeout made it two outs. Then Eric Filla hit a drive to left field, finding a hole. Kramer scored to win the game. (A link below provides an account of the game courtesy of IHigh.com.)

It was my first visit to Jackie Robinson stadium. The usual rock and rap music was played during the game. It surprised me thought that we never heard any Sons of Westwood or any other rah-rah music.

When the game was over, I longed to hear "Rover".
