Of course, it's ALWAYS a good time to talk about gymnastics. Incredibly buff young women defying gravity by running, jumping, twirling, dancing, balancing, throwing themselves through the air -- all for the glory of Bruin athletics. Could there BE a better sport? So here's what I found out:
There were 8 regionals, one of which was hosted by UCLA. The top 2 teams from each regional go to the NCAA championships, held this year in Gainesville, Florida. Regional individual event winners whose teams didn't make it into the championships are also invited to compete. The 16 teams are split into 8 for an afternoon session and 8 for an evening session.
The top 3 teams from each session, along with event winners whose teams did not compete, go to the super six finals, again split into two sessions. The top point getters from the combined sessions win the team and individual titles.
UCLA won its regional and will be competing in the afternoon session on April 22nd. Other Pac-10 teams competing include Oregon State, also in the afternoon session, and Stanford, in the evening session.
