Oregon State's Greg Peavey gave up just two hits and one run in pitching his complete game, while UCLA's Gerrit Cole and two other Bruin pitchers gave up 6 hits, 8 walks, 3 hit batters, and 4 runs--on a bases loaded walk and a bases loaded double. Not a proud night for Bruin pitching. Not much of a night for the hitters, either.
The setting was just as magical, in its own way, as that described in the recent LA Times article about Jackie Robinson Stadium. On the OSU campus, Goss Stadium is a gem, a scaled-down major league-style park with a brick facade, arched entrances to the stands, bright orange seating, and an immaculately groomed field of green, framed by campus buildings and tall evergreens.
I'd be lying if I said my first look at this year's Bruin baseball team was anything but a disappointment. I was one of just a handful of UCLA fans at the game, and we took a lot of good natured ribbing from OSU fans about our #3 nationally ranked team's performance. But it's just one game. I expect Bruin pitching and hitting to get back on track tomorrow.
