I've been to South Dakota almost every year for the past 28 years, and no, I didn't lose a bet. My wife was born in Rapid City and my in-laws live in central South Dakota, near the Nebraska border. My father-in-law is a rancher/farmer on at least 10,000 acres spread out over 3 farms. I've been offered houses and farms to work and live on multiple times by pops. As my wife says, it's a good place to be "from". Including wind chill factor, 50-75 below zero can make for hard winters. Thanks but no thanks.
I've been to Mt.Rushmore a few times, Reptile Gardens once, some of the underground caves, Lead & Deadwood and of course Sturgis. I have yet to visit the Crazy Horse memorial.
The people there are very friendly and hospitible but they love to gossip. Smaller the town, the more the gossip.
Working the cattle (I've done it), mending fences, driving the John Deere (how cliche), only hearing nothing but the cows moo and the wind blow is very cathartic for the mind and soul.
Make sure you visit Wall Drug where you can get coffee for 5 cents!!!
