LOS ANGELES (AP) — Art Venegas is out as UCLA's men's track and field coach after 10 years.

The university announced his departure Thursday, one day after his contract had expired.

The Bruins won a Pac-10 team championship and two West Region team titles during Venegas' tenure. They were fifth in the conference championships and seventh in the regional this season, but didn't score a point at last month's NCAA championships.

"We felt a change in leadership was necessary," said Glenn Toth, senior associate athletic director.

Venegas spent 28 years with the program as an assistant and head coach. He declined an offer to stay on as coach of the throwers, Toth said
