After last Tuseday's games, on the strength of a 5-1 stretch, including taking 2 of 3 at Dodger Stadium, the Giants closed to within 3 games of the Dodgers, who were faltering at 1-4 in the atermath of Manny's suspension.
I bet a lot of Giant fans were having visions that the trend will continue, and were counting the days before the Dodgers were caught.
Well, since then, the Dodgers have gone 7-1, while the Giants had the reverse record, including three one-run losses at SD which allowed the latter to creep within 1/2 game of them. So all of a sudden the 3 game lead ballooned to 9 games, and visions of the race being over by Memorial Day. (This vision should be a lot more accurate, since the Giants are no better than a .500 team, and incapable of mounting a charge over the long haul.)
I love it, their Cy Young winner finally pitches like a Cy Young winner, and they lose anyway. They tied in the sixth, and went ahead in the ninth. But they couldn't get the last out. Hey, the more agonizing the losses, the better chance they will fall apart. And losing 1-2, 1-2, and 2-3 in SD may just be the ticket!
