2019 more than a million crossed illegally. Trump stood before the country called it a crisis, wanted to use emergency powers to build more wall.
Trump called for Congress to pass a comprehensive border reform bill, that didn't pass. That bill, written in 2019, was the foundation of the bill Sen Lankford along with bipartisan support tried to pass recently that Trump himself blocked and called a terrible deal.
They literally based the bill on the bill Trump was backing in 2019, lankford has already publicly stated this, they were trying to pass a bill that was strong enough and that they could get support from the GOP to pass. Many Dems were mad that the bill was too far right, they didn't like it, but it still had enough support to pass until Trump killed it.
