A few facts for you . . .

The U S. Constitution says treaties ratified by the United States are LAW within its jurisdiction.

Among the treaties we've signed are multilateral treaties that define how refugees are to be treated. This is LAW.

Refugees, by LAWFUL treaty, may cross into the U.S. anywhere across the border. They can request asylum by identifying themselves to any border officer. Once they've identified themselves they can be held briefly in custody, assigned a court date, and released--just like anyone awaiting a hearing. NONE of this is illegal.

The President of the United States cannot UNILATERALLY de-ratify U.S. treaties.

The refugees are NEITHER illegal or undocumented. They are respecting our legal processes, their request is on the record, and they receive papers confirming their status. [Furthermore, refugees seeking asylum are not carrying in illicit drugs. What drug lord is going to want tens of thousands of dollars of his product carried by a fatigued mother wading across the Rio Grande? Drugs are smuggled through official ports of entry, hidden in cars and trucks.]

The vast majority of asylum seekers show up for their hearing.

The vast majority of asylum requests are deemed unsupported and rejected, leading to deportation.

What causes breakdowns are the lengthy wait for the hearing, insufficient resources to locate the small minority (though large number) of no-shows, and insufficient resources for efficient deportation.

The Senate bill that the House Speaker refuses to put on the floor for a vote addresses the shortage of judges, officers, and resources that would speed up our processes.

Speedier justice would accelerate deportations. Which would send a message to refugees to be more careful about whether they qualify before attempting the difficult and draining journey.

The Senate bill is both prudent and lawful. It is a bipartisan bill crafted by concerned and informed Senators of both parties. This is why nearly all observers agree that, if the Speaker relented, it would pass with a large bipartisan majority.

So, please. Stop saying ignorant stuff.
