with work, no doubt bolstered, doubled down, and weaponized by the management class: thinking that our work is definitional to who we are, with the expectation that we need to be passionate about our work and the company we work for. And of course, if you're passionate about your work, you'd do it for less and you would take less time off and generally accept the company as a part of yourself.

If you don't have this romanticized view of work and you are always aware that the work you do always ends up benefiting the people who are higher up on the management ladder than you, and that those folks higher up basically see you as a completely replaceable cog who needs to be regularly replaced by less experienced people who are simply thrilled to even have a job in the first place and be less critical of everything, you may want to be more interested in watching out for your own interests in the relationship.

It's a matter of basic dignity. I imagine (but don't know for fact) that they have that more than we do.
