MLB could be heading for a major overhaul, with fewer regular-season games, longer playoff series, and teams getting to pick their postseason opponents.
Under a new proposal, Major League Baseball would shorten the regular season from 162 to 154 games beginning in 2029, giving players a standard day off each week to help with rest and recovery.
The Division Series would also expand from best-of-five to best-of-seven, potentially adding eight postseason games.
But one of the biggest changes could arrive even sooner. Beginning in 2027, the No. 3 seed would choose whether to face the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in the Wild Card Series. Once that round is complete, the No. 1 seed would get to select which Wild Card winner it wants to face in the Division Series.
The proposed changes are part of a broader plan that includes a salary cap and floor system, potentially reshaping both the regular season and the road to the World Series.

The teams getting to pick their opponents just seems like an unnecessary gimmick to me.
