They could have very well shrugged it off, but they didn't. John Steinbeck in his book "Travels with Charley" was in New Orleans in late 1960. Schools were integrating and whites were demonstrating everyday. They screamed at a black girl, of course. Then when they saw a white father and child complying with the new law, all hell broke loose. The racists hated blacks, but got real triggered by whites who broke ranks. Not much has changed.
