I have ":Distant Hills", "Winter Light", and "Out of the Woods" (which is where Waterwheel is from) and those are some of my favorites. They also have "Music Of Another Present Era" listed as the album that precedes "Distant Hills" with good reputation, but I haven't had the chance to listen to that one. Just keep in mind that every now and then, they have a piece or two in those albums that are group improvisations and those tend to be a little more on the atonal type and a bit chaotic. That's something I personally have a fairly high tolerance for, but your mileage may vary.
Otherwise their compositional pieces all tend to be of this general nature. Towner switched to the piano at times (and he's damn good there too)
The original line-up on those albums have another ultra talented musician, Collin Walcott on percussion (among a bunch of other instruments, including the sitar). He died in a traffic accident in the '80s. The percussionist in this video, Trulok Gurti (had to look up his name) joined as the replacement after that.
