You need to keep the prices low to sell more but in order to do that, you need to pay your workers less, which means they can't buy the goods you're selling. So when the entire industry adopts that model, wages get depressed across the board.
Then you reach a point where you can't find workers at that wage level, you have to bring them from abroad or you need to institute slavery, both of which have played a crucial role in this country's history. It's part of the DNA of our economy at this point.
We're trapped in this cycle and can't find our way out, because the way out is for us to do things that go against our grain, i.e., we'd have to abandon the radical form of capitalism we've instituted in this country.
