My two cents...

Although I live in Huntington Beach, I don’t have much insight into local politics. For what it’s worth, here’s my summary about the recent election:

Measure A was for repealing a proposed “book review committee” that would decide who could access certain books. The measure passed by a vote of roughly 30,000 in favor versus 21,000 against. That’s good…

Measure B was for blocking a proposal to privatize the library. This measure also passed, by roughly 31,000 votes to 20,000. For me, this was the big one - I abhor the idea privatizing our public library. The main library itself is a jewel, and it hosts a variety of programs and performances. I’m glad we kept the library, but I have a nagging feeling that someday in the future, some dim bulb in city hall will try again…

BTW, the main library sits in a large public park. The park itself is very nice - it includes the Shipley Nature Center, a Frisbee golf course, equestrian trails, a dog park, a bandstand, and much more. It’s a good-sized park, large enough to host Civil War re-enactments. Across the street is a large sport complex.

I enjoy these public amenities. I am also surprised that we enjoy these public benefits even while the city politics are dominated by troglodytes. I don’t know if an alternative, progressive political environment would have resulted in better public amenities, but I very much appreciate what we have here in HB…
