Watching a special on youtube where a guy is comparing Trump and his corruption to Ferdinand Marcos. Marcos ran the Philippines for 21 years, in 1972 he declared martial law to avoid being voted out. THere were a bunch of dissident groups so he used that as an excuse and had them in martial law for FOURTEEN YEARS.In 1986 he declared an election, rigged it, and then the country had riots. having been accused of embezzling between 5 and 10 BILLION dollars, remember this is 1986 that's a TON of money in the Philippines he had to flee the country to stay alive. and surprise, Ronald Reagan sent two planes and gave him asylum in Hawaii. They took millions of dollars illegally with them and the family. They were eventually tried in a class action "alien tort action" and he was convicted of violating international law.
Trump is using the presidency to enrich himself and his family(and donors) in very much the same way Marcos did. Marcos was much younger, Trump won't be able to declare martial law and last 14 years, but it's a very similar situation Marcos took over, shut down the independent media, fired all the people who weren't loyal to him and took control of the court systems.
The only reason he was eventually ousted is foreign countries had interests in the Philippines and made it clear they weren't going to tolerate it anymore. With the people rioting it became clear to Marcos he had to flee, if he stayed either Filipinos were going to violently remove him, or some foreign country was going to take him out.
The court ruled in favor of the 10,000 filipinos in the class action case in the amount of 2 billion.. They could only go after his assets in the US because the Philippine courts wouldn't honor the decision. Marcos embezzled so much money that to this day the country has not recovered from that and staggeringly they elected his son "Bong Bong" in the last election. If you know anything about their elections they routinely buy votes and that's how Marcos won, he used money they embezzled almost 40 years ago to buy the 2022 election
Not suggesting the US is going to go the same way the Philippines did but it's insane to me that I'm watching this show and thinking he's not crazy alleging the similarities here.
The real insanity is it took 36 years for Marcos' son to get elected. Trump got elected again not even 4 years after he tried to steal an election and he's now bleeding the country of money at a staggering rate.
