I think much of Michigan's woes are due to Warde Manuel.

Bad Athletic Department leadership leads to bad coaching hires and sets up a tainted culture pervasive through athletics.

I have no evidence for my assertions, but I got that feeling when Michigan navigated the Sherrone Moore debacle. Got that same feeling when the Jerry Sandusky issues were revealed at Penn State.
