Call me crazy, but if the Chesney thing doesn't work out, to me, the worst thing about it would be the timing.
There are other good coaches out there. Compare him to Klieman, who is retiring at KSU. Chesney made 1AA playoffs. Klieman won 4 championship in 5 years, reaching the final in the other. As far as I can tell, Chesney's signature win was against Louisville this year. He's got a .570 Big12 winning percentage.
Not advocating going out and hiring Klieman, though I wouldn't be opposed, I'm just saying there's a lot of Chesney hype, and here's a guy no one would want, who has a track record that I would consider better.
Mullen is out there. I feel like he's proven he still has it. If we're looking for an emergency hire b/c Chesney lets us down, he'd be very good.
If we lose Chesney, just off the top, we could try for Lewis at SDSU. I'd be tempted to take a flyer on Rogers at Wazzoo. A 1AA championship and a 1AA loss in the semi's. 6-6 this season, under tough circumstances - includes beating San Diego State by 23. Losing to Mississippi by 4 at Oxford, losing to Virginia by 2 at CVille, to Chesney/JMU by 4 in Harrisburg. Oh, and getting his butt kicked by Morris and NTSU.
To me, it looks like Rogers might be a bit of a step down from Chesney. But, it would be close.
I'm just throwing out names of guys that we could presumably get. I'm sure there are other good gettable coaches out there.
To me, Silverfield would have been the golden nugget, of the guys we'd have had a shot at.
On that note, I think he and Sumrall were dumb to go to Arkansas and Florida. I don't think anyone is going to win at either of those schools.
