by anything other than automatic bids. It doesn't matter how big the field is made to include this team or that, whose presence is assumed to bring more revenues.
The set of teams to go to playoffs MUST be determined by a fixed algorithm that COMPLETELY takes out the discretionary component. IOW, take rankings completely out of the picture.
Either that, or give up on the notion of a unitary champion altogether. We can't have it both ways.
