he was promoted to HC after 2 years. But in actuality, he was still the OC. Chip handled the offense, Oregon and other coaches took care of recruiting, admin matters, alumni and donor relations--except for Knight, Chip had a good relationship w Phil. Nick Aliotti, Oregon's DC while Chip was head coach handled the defense. Per Nick, "During a 2019 interview, former Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti said that Chip Kelly never spoke to him on the headset during a game." And while Chip was HC at Oregon, they were very successful over 4 years, going 46-7, played in 2 Rose Bowls (1-1) and the NC game (lost). Certainly 1 reason Chip, Oregon was so successful was because of the Blur which teams now know how to defend. And with the transfer portal, NIL, more involvement with donors, I doubt this HC structure would work in CFB today but it worked well for Oregon and Chip from 2009-12.
