Maryland led us 6-0 in a mud bowl. We finally mounted a big drive, all the way down to the goal line. On fourth down, a Bruin - not sure my memory is right on this but I want to say it was Doug Peters - carried the ball into the end zone but they called him either short or having fumbled. Maryland won it 6-0.
Next day the newspapers ran a photograph taken right along the goal line which showed the ball firmly in the RB's hands and past the goal line.
Bad call cost us two NCs in a row. Definitely the two best programs in the nation at the time. (And yes, that play still ticks me off more than 70 years later)
