It's not just a wrist thing. The shoulder complex and the lat are also involved. In fact, the whole kinetic chain from the feet thrusting off the ground, the rotation of the pelvis and hips, and then finally the upper body, arm and wrist are essential to throwing a football with pace, spin and accuracy

Many tennis players work on their service action by throwing the football. The pronation is the same.

Guys who try to throw a football by throwing a "curveball" (right pinky finger goes under while right thumb goes over) are doomed to failure.
