That could be, but things are often not as basic as they seem. Maybe he (arguably) fulfilled $200K worth of pay for the time he was there. Like an employee who is paid for the time he worked, and then stops getting paid once he's gone.
What did the contract say? Did it require him to be on campus for a whole year? I don't know exactly what it said.
