Let's be a fair.

He had 42 freshmen. 33 true freshmen and 17 redshirt freshmen who never played any FB. That's 40 of the 85 roster including a true freshman QB in DTR. He had a decent number of 5 star players but there were holes everywhere on the roster.

He had to start our QB, OL, and DL from scratch. Those are our 3 most important units that take the most time to develop.

I'm not a Kelly fan in any way shape or form but though we lack stars on our team we have a much more developed depth chart. I'd much rather start in our current scenario than in Kelly's situation.

I like what I read about Foster but it pretty much reminds me of the hype behind an equal unknown in Karl Dorrell.

From the LA Daily News

Chip Kelly spent 15 practices evaluating his new roster during the spring. With his first game as the UCLA head coach now just one month away, he’s going to have to start the evaluation process all over.

The Bruins added 36 new players since wrapping spring practice in April, including 33 true freshmen. The new players make up one-third of the total roster. From the two quarterbacks who will factor into the most-watched position battle of Kelly’s first year to much-needed offensive and defensive linemen, many of the newest faces could see early playing time when UCLA begins its season on Sept. 1 against Cincinnati in the Rose Bowl.

Kelly’s first roster includes only eight seniors. Nearly half the roster, with 35 true freshmen and 17 redshirt freshmen, has never taken a collegiate snap. The young players will have to grow up quickly.

“There are going to be a bunch of guys that just showed up that are going to play for us because of sheer numbers,” Kelly said at Pac-12 media day last week.

...

Although the Bruins are young, they still have highly touted prospects. The team’s five former five-star recruits are the second-most for a single Pac-12 team this season, trailing only USC.
