My high school, Northfield Mount Hermon dropped our football program a few years ago. We had a rich (if not winning) history, that includes a world famous (or infamous) photo of our big rivalry game against Deerfield continuing while a classroom building burned down nearby.
When I was there in the ‘80s, enrollment was 1,200, which was high by New England prep school standards. Twenty years ago, we closed one campus from the merger, and enrollment dropped to 650. I don’t know if the decision was based on a lack of players, or the desire to keep the students free from brain injuries that would diminish players’ ability to donate to the school later in life.
That game was the highlight of Deerfield Weekend. I wonder what the focus is now.
