Bill Plaschke has been named the 2024 winner of the Red Smith Award by the Associated Press Sports Editors, the highest honor in sports journalism. It really shouldn’t have been a surprise because he has been voted top sports columnist by APSE nine times and placed in the top 10 22 times. Earlier this year he was inducted into the National Sports Media Assn. Hall of Fame.
Now some here hate him and call him a "hack", but this proves they obviously don't know anything about journalism. A good writer gets your attention and pushes buttons. If you're talking about him, then he has succeeded. Sometimes he picks the hot topic of the week or month and takes an extreme position, which guarantees readers will react. You can call him a troll. Those who know sports journalism honor him.
