I've sat in like Row 8 or 10, something like that. It's a bummer when the play is close. But, I'm assuming the kids are getting super discounted seats. They know what they're buying when they buy it. Those seats will be the last to sell. They'll only sell for high demand games. If a kid wants to pay more for a seat that's higher up, they can do it.
They can buy early so they get a seat in 7-10, or they can pay more for a non-student seat, or they can buy an obstructed view seat, or they can skip the game. I think it's great. From there, you can always watch the jumbo. And, if I'm at the opposite end of the field from where the LOS is, I've always kinda got an eye on the jumbo anyway.
