One thing which Kelly did, and maintained, was fixing the tackling mess Mora left behind. We were absolutely AWFUL at tackling by the end of Mora's tenure. It's why we were so far behind against A&M at the Rose Bowl, and it continued to get worse that year.
We had plenty of defensive issues under Kelly, but we became, and continued to be, a very good tackling team.
Other fundamentals also were dramatically better. Kelly was and is a good coach, he just sucked at the rest of the job.
