At Chip's first press conference when asked if he'd run the O he ran at Oregon. "When I got to Oregon nobody played fast or had shiny helmets. Now everybody plays fast and has shiny helmets."
I mean, I didn't want him in the first place, but I was like "did he say that to Guerrero in the interview? Why did we hire him if he didn't want to be Chip Kelly?"
Then, when he ran off tons of players.
Then he junked a good recruiting class Mora was building, offered 31 four and five star guys and landed .... one.
Then, and this is huge. His first season we were loaded with conventional DE's. Loaded. we had Jaelyn Phillips, Rick Wade, and KLS. Despite that, he ran a defense that didn't have a DE. We could have had 2 all-america DE's + Rick Wade who was very good. But, Chip played a 3-4, forcing Wade and KLS to play as DT's Rick Wade was like 6-6, 280, and Chip is playing him as a DT. Same with KLS. And, he played Phillips as an OLB, in pass coverage on most plays. An All-American edge rusher dropping back in coverage on almost every play. Then, the other two DT's were rotated between super slow Freshman 300 pounders - one of them was 330. Our pass rush was comical. As interior linemen, Wade and KLS weren't getting penetration. The big fella would break through once in a while but they were soooo slow, the QB only had to jog in a leisurely fashion outside of the pocket to have alll the time in the world. There was no outside contain. On anything. The pocket, the running game, nothing.
