OSU is a safer place for Chip

Chip was on the hot seat for most of last year. Jarmond basically told him to engage more with recruits and NIL, which he hate to do. Combined with a loss of DC and a lot of good players, UCLA would struggle in the B1G this year. If he turns in a 4 win season, he would most likely be fired.

OSU OC job is safer for him, Ryan Day will do all the recruiting and NIL stuff, Chip just has to call the plays and coach. OSU is loaded this year and will most likely beat Michigan (the only blemish on Ryan Day's record). Support from his boss, an NFL-esque roster and a harbaugh-less rival. Most importantly, it's a job that he can retire on given a few good seasons.

I don't see it as a ding on UCLA, it's just no longer the type of job that suits him. With that B1G money, hope UCLA can spend on someone that brings a different attitude to our once proud football program
