If I was gonna bet, the "multiple" teams is misconstrued. When people interview for NFL HC jobs, they mention potential staffers. For example, when a defensive minded HC who has no previous HC experience like Mike McDonald interviews for the Panthers HC position and Tepper asks him what his staff might look like, he could say "Chip" or someone like that who has previous HC experience.
When Chip was fired, it was my understanding that everyone concluded that his offensive schemes were too vanilla for the NFL. I have no idea why belief would have changed based on his tenure at UCLA. We hardly have an innovative offense.
