In not making retaining Angus McClure a priority?
I don't believe he was a great coach, but what he did offer is something that this program is now completely lacking - someone who understands the recruiting landscape, the unique challenges of getting athletes admitted to UCLA, and has longstanding relationships with both the surrounding HS programs and UCLA admissions.
It is pretty clear from this just recently completed recruiting cycle that Chip's staff has been essentially running around like a chicken with no head. Rather than attempting to navigate the admissions process with finesse and perhaps potentially lose a recruit or two academics, his response to UCLA admissions has been to simply only recruit kids with Ivy League credentials - a small and not particularly talented pool - and one which Stanford scoops the cream off the top before we even get close.
Additionally, numerous high level recruits indicated that UCLA got in on them too late - a product of the staff lacking relationships with these schools and taking way too long to evaluate.
