He has come achievements but one of his proudest “claims to fame” was as a college player leading the infamous Princeton upset of “defending national champion” UCLA in the 1996 opening round of the. NCAA. In fact he personally takes credit for “defending” Toby Baily on his ill-advised missed middie with 3 seconds to go. In Mystics games I watched, Betts, coming off the bench, was frequently ignored as she positioned inside around the basket, her teammates instead hero balling for lower percentage outside shots or forced drives.
I do also recall his being quoted when Betts was drafted that “she’d have to forget everything she learned at UCLA” an incredibly tone deaf pronouncement, like ..she should forget how to be a champion? I guess he didn't need any of that not playong her much while getting eliminated 0-2 in their playoffs.
Counter-intuitive and counter-productive. Likely she would be better off elsewhere where she could be the starting center-piece.
