local resident is a fan of big-time in-state school and ends up going to a more prestigious school. I’ve seen this happen with Stanford undergrads who were die-hard UCLA fans for athletics. Another example being Duke undergrads, but die-hard fans of Ohio State and Texas because that was their home state school growing up.
