He often went by the bench on his way down court and even stopped sometimes to get his instructions. He was a very effective point guard in the so-called "messed up" system. Dent is a good player but he's no Tyger. Tyger was one of the most effective point guards I have ever seen given his inherent liabilities - too small, not quick enough, average hops, had trouble creating for himself, etc.
I think you are correct in implying that Dent is not that kind of player and he needs a m ore free hand in a more open floor. Cronin might be better served if he did open things up a lot and just let his guys go, but that's not the way he coaches. What I've seen is Cronin opening things up a bit, but IMO it is nowhere near enough. What is known is that everyone involved knew all of this before hand and still they chose each other. What we're seeing is the result of those decisions. No one got into this expecting what has happened. Was it a miscalculation on everyone's part? Perhaps, but also perhaps Dent and Cronin didn't anticipate that the elevated level of play could have affected Dent as much as it perhaps has.
