Interestingly, in his post game remarks, Cronin responded to a question about why Booker played only one minute last night by saying he has to play better defense and he knows it. (He also said Williams was the best player in Monday's practice so he got the start but he got sick during the game.)
I think if we view what you're saying not as a set-in-concrete use imperative but situationally and as a motivational and teaching tool, it's really hard to see any other way forward.
As to the centers, they have to earn their minutes on the court and the place to do that starts in practice. If they aren't used, they won't develop, but if they can't produce and torpedo the team's efforts to improve and play effective team defense, there is nothing at all to lose by sitting them and perhaps something significant to be gained
