Of the seven local schools (Pepperdine, Loyola, UCR, UCI, CSLB, CSF, CSUN), UC Irvine has been probably the best of those teams, finishing 1st or 2nd in the Big West all but one year since 2014. They almost won the NIT this year but for many missed free throws late in the game by 80% FT shooters.
We have played all but Loyola and UCI multiple times since 2020. But the last time we played UC Irvine was in the 2017-18 season, the only time since 2012. There must be a reason for this.
