It seems inconceivable to me that as great a coach as Wooden was with his integrity toward the game and his position that he would "hand over the reins" to the players - that's just such an "un-coachlike" thing to do. Walton has proven over time a disruptive and polarizing personality and I think it was evident even as early as his college playing days as well. It's probably an element that helped to make him that great player he was and the great competitor as well but still be a negative in terms of team harmony which often rears it's ugly head in crisis - like during the North Carolina State game. UCLA was clearly the better team but wasn't the best team that night and not because of a lack of talent. Coaches often have to deal with problematic players and I believe Walton, to some extent, was that kind of player even with him being such a great team player as he was.
