Wooden did loosen the reins on this team because it had 5 seniors who had already gone undefeated with 2 nat. championships. The seniors, led by Walton and Greg Lee, went to Wooden at the start of the year and said we have done it all for you and this year we want to run things ourselves. Wooden agreed. No mandatory team meals; no suits for away games; Wooden was far more lay back in the practices; the seniors ran the show, and lost in the semi-finals. The next year, Wooden's last, he was completely in charge again and won his 10th nat. championship. It was not a conflict with Walton, it was Wooden granting the senior's request to run their team based on their last two years of complete success.
