Your encyclopedic knowledge about other coaches puts me to shame but it only emphasizes the fact that the grass is not necessarily greener just because the name "Alford" is replaced by someone else.
UCLA is quite unique in that not only is there another hometown team that occasionally has topflight talent; but is there another top team in the country in a major metropolitan area? Georgetown comes to mind being in DC but they haven't done jack for many years.
My point may be obscure but it boils down to the fact that major college coaches are little kings in their small communities who are frightful about coming here and losing their majesty. Gene Bartow is the best example of this phenomenon. He had an excellent record here but because he didn't win the big one, UCLA people chewed him up and spit him out after two years. Yeah; he replaced an unreplaceable legend but the stench of his departure lingers on.
